PROCEDURE OF RW MANAGEMENT
Step 6: Disposal of Radioactive Waste
Disposal is the last step and most important step in radioactive waste management.
Disposal is the emplacement of waste material in a repository without the intention of retrieving it in
the future. It will no longer be considered for reuse, recycling or recovery.
Radioactive waste disposal is very crucial because it will involve public as well and critical when dealing
with long-lived, high activity and radiotoxicity waste.
The repository must fulfil the criteria stipulated by the regulation through Environmental Impact
Assessment (EIA) or Radiological Impact Assessment (RIA). The parameters are;
1. Geology and hydrogeology
2. Population density
3. Accessibility
4. Flora and fauna
5. Minerals
6. Meteorology
7. Seismicity
