Step 5: Storage of radioactive waste
The emplacement of radioactive materials or waste in a facility with the intention that it will be
retrieved at a later time.
Types of storage facility to be constructed depends on the nature of the radioactive waste.
(1) Placement of Radiation & Caution Signs
Like any other area, which deals with radiation sources, there should be appropriate signs to
clearly
indicate the nature of the facility
(2) Restricted Area
Only authorized personnel are allowed to enter the premise and security locks is important
(3) Cooling
Cooling system is required for storage high level wastes that generate heat.
(4) Shielding
Wastes that containing gamma-emitter require appropriate shielding to avoid unnecessary
exposure
