PROCEDURE OF RW MANAGEMENT

❑ Treatment method based on the nature of waste

                            1. Airborne (gaseous form)
                            ▪ This waste normally generated in contained, ventilated enclosures or building and discharged to the

                                 atmosphere using the ventilation system
                            ▪ Filtration, absorption and cryogenic/compression might be used as treatment methods.
                            ▪ High efficiency filters in the extract line remove most of the particulate matter

                            ▪ Beds of activated charcoal granules can be used for removal of some vapour such as radioiodine
                            ▪ Kr-85 with long half-life may be compressed into liquid form.

                            2. Liquid waste
                            ▪ The methods for treatment liquid waste are ion-exchange, chemical precipitation, evaporation,

reverse osmosis, ultra-filtration, electrochemical, solvent extraction etc.
                            ▪ Some of the process such as evaporation method will change the liquid waste into solid waste.

                            3. Solid waste
                            ▪ The treatment methods that can be used for solid waste are mechanical (compaction), thermal

(incineration, pyrolysis), metal melting and sintering, chemical (acid digestion), biochemical and
                                 photo-oxidation decomposition
