Half-Value Layer
The half-value layer (HVL) is commonly used for this purpose and to determine
what thickness of a given material is necessary to reduce the exposure rate from a
source to some level.
For example, if a Gamma source is producing 369 R/h at one foot and a four HVL
shield is placed around it, the intensity would be reduced to 23.0 R/h
