Principle 9: Safety of Facilities

☼ The safety facilities for radioactive waste management shall be appropriately assured

during their lifetime

☼ During the sitting, design, construction, commissioning, operation and

decommissioning of a facility or closure of a repository, priority needs to be given to

safety matters including the prevention of accidents and limitation of consequences
should accidents occur. Throughout this process account is typically taken of public
