CLASSIFICATION OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE

Classification of radioactive waste is important for ease of handling,

transportation and enhancement of safety while going through the waste

                                  management processes.

Basically, the classification is based on half-life and its activity.

The wastes are classified into 5 categories.

(Ref: Atomic Energy Licensing (Radioactive Waste Management) Regulations 2011, First Schedule,

                                 Radioactive Waste Classification)

                                    i. Cleared Waste

ii. Low Level (Short Lived) / Decay Waste

iii. Low and Intermediate Level – Short Lived Waste (LILW-SL)

iv. Low and Intermediate Level – Long Lived Waste (LILW-LL)

                                    v. High Level Waste - HLW
