Chemical Stage : (few seconds)
The free radicals and oxidising agents may attack the complex
molecules which form the chromosomes.
Biological Stage : (tens of minutes to tens of years)
The following may occur:
a. early death of the cell
b. prevention or delay of cell division
c. permanent modification which may be passed to the progeny
cells
