Unstable Nuclides
• As Z increases beyond about 20 or:
▪ n/p ratio becomes greater than 1
▪ Keeps on increasing with Z
• Beta radiation:
▪ Emission of energetic electrons
▪ Results when an n/p ratio is too high for stability
• Positron emission or electron capture occurs when it is too low for stability
